Eco-Friendly Cabinet Options

Sustainability is a hot topic when it comes to remodeling as consumers and manufacturers strive to find ways to become more eco-conscious. Cabinets—whether for the kitchen, bathroom, or any other part of the house—are available in many environmentally friendly options. To keep your remodel eco-friendly, look for the following features in your cabinets:

  • Made from sustainable materials. Cabinets made from bamboo are one of the most eco-friendly options available. Bamboo is a fast-growing, which makes it a very sustainable option. Lyptus wood, a hybrid wood made from two types of eucalyptus trees, is another fast-growing option. Lyptus is harvested from plantations, rather than natural forests, which adds to its eco-friendly appeal.
  • Free from formaldehyde. Many cabinets made with plywood, particle board, or MDF contain formaldehyde, a chemical that helps to harden wood products. Formaldehyde is an indoor air contaminant and can cause irritation to the throat, nose and eyes. It can also cause breathing issues in some children, older Americans and people with asthma.
  • Low VOC paints and varnishes. Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, are human-made chemicals that are used to manufacture paint and varnishes. These chemicals are emitted into the air and contribute to air pollution. VOCs can also be harmful to humans, irritating the ears, nose, and throat, causing headaches or nausea, and potentially damaging the liver, kidneys, and central nervous system.
  • FSC or ESP certified. Various certifications are available for cabinet manufacturers that are committed to protecting the environment. Cabinets that carry the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) or the Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP) seal are certified to have been manufactured using eco-friendly measures that preserve air quality and prevent pollution, use sustainable resources, and minimize waste.

Remember that many times cabinets can be recycled or reused rather than taken to the dump. Consider if your old cabinets can be put to use in your basement or garage. If you have no use for them in your home, donate them to the Habitat for Humanity of Horry County ReStore so they can have a new life in another home.
